Why should I study in china?
I’d like to answer in the perspective of a Chinese student.
Pros:
- Low tuition fee together with high acceptance rate. Sometimes even with a scholarship. Chinese are always very envious about that and sometimes blame our government for that.
- Privileges. Foreigners are first-class citizens compared to ordinary Chinese. I’d tell you a story, once a Japanese lost a bike, and it was found by the police just couple of days later, which was incredible for Chinese.
- Low labor prices. For example, you can take a taxi for 3km with less than 2 USD in most cities.(Maybe all the cities.). Eat out with 14 USD/person would be quite satisfying. (Actually 2 USD is about the average in the school canteen.)
- Teach English. As long as you are a white native speaker, 20 dollars/hr. is quite easy to earn in this developing country. (That’s higher than the Part-time job in the McDonald, right?) Professionals can even earn 100 USD/hr.
- Safety. Anyway I had never seen a real gun. Knives are not allowed in subway and trains. Seldom see beggers and stramps (in Eastern China), on the other hand, those who are hopeless and may tend to conduct a crime are very rare. And homicide is rare, too. Lower than 1 in a hundred thousand according to the statistics. So you do not have to worry when you are living in downtown.
Cons:
- Inconvenience. You have lots of things to deal with, lots of boring paperwork, registration… My buddies are always asking about this in a wechat groups. I mean, if I were the administrator, I’ll just make it as easy as it could, and the bureau and the data would be the guy that run around. Plus, taking a train is much more compicated for a foreigner.
- Pollution. Actually cities like Shanghai are quite well, at least still acceptable most of the time. Welcome to Fudan Univ.(Unpaid AD).
- Network. Simply buy a VPN, like the Express VPN or Nord VPN. (Actually I do not recommend them because the price is relatively high.)
- Freedom. Ah… Of course not better than the West. You may need none in China (Rallying? Publishing?), and you would not be arrested because you say "Xi is an idiot." in Twitter.(Actually lots of Chinese do so and they still live in their homes. Only in some rare cases will you get trouble. Btw, many famous Chinese people have Twitter.)
- Relatively low quality of education. That’s the one that I actually worry about. Professors have a lot of researching work and they are more intimate with the graduates rather than the undergraduates. And fortunately it’s getting better because the Ministry of education said that all professors should teach the undergraduates. But compared with their Western peers, they care less about undergraduates and they are willing to use the textbooks that are published by themselves rather than the best ones. (And again, if you study in the Fudan University, this would be much better. lol.)
